Michel Morissette

Instrumental guitar accompaniment at special events such as private views, cocktail parties and concerts.

Very close to the classic technique, fingerstyle allows the use of the guitar as an orchestra led by a conductor, namely the guitarist. Thus, the lead guitarist produces the melody, bass and harmonic accompaniment by plucking the strings without plectrum or pick, hence the term fingerstyle. It is with this approach that I offer my music in arrangements of pop songs of various trends for instrumental guitar, from Félix Leclerc to the Beatles, and a more conventional type of repertoire.

I interpret great composers of all genres and from all eras, from Bach to Pat Metheny. These include the South Americans Agustin Barrios, Heitor Villa-Lobos and Leo Brouwer, the Spaniards Francisco Tarrega, Isaac Albéniz and Paco Peña. Several works of my repertoire come from musicians who have made a career in a different style, but who created touching works for classical guitar like Steve Howe (Yes) and Steve Hackett (Genesis). My interpretation of the works of these composers has sole ambition of touching the heart with the vibration of the strings of my guitar.

The Career of Michel Morissette

My career as a guitarist reflects my openness to the music of all genres and continues with a return to my roots. Classically trained in my early years as a guitarist at the age of 14, I immediately shifted to rock music to first create my own compositions with the groups Nuances and Perce-Neige. My attraction to jazz was confirmed with the creation of the SS-12 Blues Band formed with fellow musicians from Université de Sherbrooke (1981-82). Rock music called me again and I went on tour with the Sybil ensemble, which included Yves Marchand (Zébulon) and Jimmy Bourgoing (Les Colocs). Back in jazz, a further study of the interpretation of this music as a solo guitarist, as practised Joe Pass, allowed me to create the show entitled Jazz et poésie (1986-87).

I then spent a long period devoted to song (1988-2010). First accompanying singer-songwriter Maurice Boyer, I executed the melodic lines of the songs of Georges Brassens on several stages in Quebec and Belgium, whose show Hommage à Brassens was broadcasted and presented as part of the radio show Ce soir aux refrains hosted by Monique Giroux. I also accompanied Maurice Boyer on his Le Prince des huées (1995) album and on several stages (Les Francofolies de Montréal, Studio Theatre of Place des Arts, Festival d'été de Québec, etc.). Songs speak to me so much that I started a singer-songwriter career and in 1999 I won the first prize of the Les Coteaux song festival. I offer my original songs in the show called Entre la griffe et la rose. A long period of creation continues in 2009 with the production of my Et si s'arrêtait le temps album.

Time has actually stopped until the creation of my Transit album in 2015. This latest production presents eleven of my popular Beatles song arrangements for instrumental guitar, Félix Leclerc, Raymond Lévesque, Greg Lake, Jimi Hendrix and Sting, and a solo version of an instrumental piece of the Pat Metheny Group. The Transit show presents the material and a selection of my solo guitar repertoire. In 2016 I created the Christmas album Winter Solstice d'hiver. The album consists in twelve great Christmas classics such as Sleigh Ride, Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire, The Little Drummer Boy… All of them are my arrangements for instrumental guitar. Performed on nylon strings fingerstyle solo guitar, these great hits are played in jazz mood and intimate atmosphere.

In 2018, Maurice Boyer (mouth-organ) and Paul Parent (Bass) joined me in the Michel Morissette Fingerstyle Trio project.

Self-taught musician, I would mention that I have honed my guitar techniques with Marc Deschênes (Duo des Concertants) at Collège Sainte-Croix (1991-92). This allowed me to familiarize myself with the innovative techniques of the South American guitarist Abel Carlevaro. The pursuit of this long journey is a return to my first love, classical guitar or fingerstyle with which I can express my musician's sensibility through pure instrumental music and without artifice.
